Two Slams Doom Otters At San Marcos

Two grand slams only Otter mistakes in 4-3, 4-2 defeats

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay pitchers allowed No. 23 Cal State San Marcos to score just two times Sunday afternoon, but that was enough for the Cougars to sweep a doubleheader, 4–3 and 4–2, at the CSUSM Softball Field.

San Marcos trailed 3–0 heading into the bottom of the seventh in the opener before Paige Donnelly hit a walkoff grand slam for the win. The Otters led 1–0 in the second inning of the nightcap when Madison Waymire also went deep with the bases loaded to account for all of the Cougar runs.

Senior Haylee Clay (Whittier/La Serna HS) was the lone Otter to hit safely in both ends of the doubleheader with a single in each game. Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) and Leah Madden (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) both had two hits in the nightcap. Jaedyn White (Fairfield/Rodriguez HS) had the lone Otter extra-base hit with a double in Game 2.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Paige Donnelly hit a walkoff grand slam in the seventh inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… reliever Zoe Ballen retired the side in order after Madden led off the seventh with a single.

WILLIS RECORD WATCH… Mackenzie Willis fanned four Cougars Sunday to raise her strikeout total to 155. She needs nine more strikeouts to break the Otter single-season record of 163 set by Cassie Gasper last season.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jaedyn White (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to host Stanislaus State for a 4-game series Apr. 12–13. The action begins with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
