Otters Drop Pair To Stanislaus

Warriors win 9-1, 4-3

SEASIDE, Calif. — A tough day for Cal State Monterey Bay softball saw the otters drop a disparate pair of game to visiting Stanislaus State, 9–1 and 4–3, Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

An RBI double by Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) staked CSUMB to a 1–0 lead in the first inning of the opener. But Stanislaus put up a seven spot in the third inning as eight different Warriors collected hits in the frame for the biggest inning by an Otter opponent since 2020.

Catcher Sarah Warden hit a 2-run homer in the fifth to allow Stanislaus to win via the 8-run rule.

Game 2 got off to a promising start when Oli Perez (Ceres HS) hit an RBI double before Lauren Bullis (La Verne/Bishop Amat HS) drove her home with a triple to stake the Otters to a 2–0 lead in the first. Things went south in the third inning when three Otter errors and a wild pitch allowed three unearned runs to score to put Stanislaus back on top.

An RBI double by Bullis plated Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) to tie the game in the home half of the third. But another error — the sixth of the game by the Otters — led to the tie breaking run for Stanislaus in the fifth.

The Otters had a golden opportunity to win it in the seventh when they put runners on second and third with nobody out for the top of the lineup. But Stanislaus starter Victoria fanned Jackie Perales and Ganaden before issuing an unintentional intentional walk to Alba to load the bases. She then fanned Perez to end the game.

The loss put a damper on an outstanding pitching performance from Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep), who scattered five hits and didn't allow an earned run in the hard-luck loss.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Sarah Warden homered to put Stanislaus on top 9–1 in the fifth inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Stanislaus starter Victoria Alarcon struck out Oli Perez with the bases loaded for the final out of the game.

WILLIS SIX AWAY FROM HISTORY… Mackenzie Willis fanned three Warriors in 2 1/3 innings Friday to bring her season total to 158. She needs six more strikeouts to break the Otter single season record of 163 set by Cassie Gasper last season.

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR ALBA… Anastacia Alba hit a pair of doubles in Friday's opener. It marked the second time this season she has hit two doubles in a game. She leads the Otters and ranks No. 7 in the CCAA with nine doubles in 2024.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba 2 (8,9). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Perez (8), Bullis (2). TRIPLES: Bullis (1). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against Stanislaus with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

GO OTTERS!
