Willis Breaks Strikeout Record in Otter Sweep of Stanislaus

Mackenzie Willis sets CSUMB single season standard as Otter win 9-0, 8-7

SEASIDE, Calif. — Freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) enjoyed an impressive day Saturday, breaking the Cal State Monterey bay single-season strikeout record while winning both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Stanislaus State at the Otter Sports Complex.

Willis threw  2-hit shutout as the Otters earned a 9–0, run-rule victory in the opener. She allowed just two hits in four innings of scoreless relief as the Otters rallied for an 8–7, 9-inning victory in the nightcap.

Willis fanned 11 batters in nine innings of work, giving her 169 for the season, surpassing the record of 163 set in 2023 by CCAA Pitcher of the year Cassie Gasper. She entered the week ranked No. 11 nationally with 158 strikeouts.

Although the record-breaking performance took center stage, the Otter offense garnered some well-earned praise of its own. The 22 hits and 17 runs were the most by CSUMB in a doubleheader this season and the most in a CCAA doubleheader since 2019.

Junior catcher Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) returned from a 7-game absence in style by finishing the doubleheader 6-for-9 with a double, three runs and two RBI. Emma Mendoza (Fountain Valley/Edison HS) made her first two collegiate starts at first base memorable by going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and her first collegiate home run.

Anastacia Alba's (Watsonville HS) 3-run homer sparked a 7-run Otters fourth inning in the opener that led to CSUMB's first run-rule win of the season. Mendoza doubled twice and Oli Perez (Ceres HS) hit her 10th double of the season to highlight the 11-hit attack.

The nightcap was as entertaining a game as the Otter have played all season. The lead changed hands four times before Jaedyn White's (Fairfield/Rodriguez HS) sac fly scored Alcayaga to walk it off in the ninth.

Mendoza's 2-run double highlighted a 3-run Otter first that overcame an early Stanislaus lead. The Warriors scored four in the second to retake the lead before Haylee Clay (Whittier/La Serna HS) knotted the game at 5–5 with a 2-run double in the third.

Mendoza hit her first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the fifth, to put the CSUMB back on top, 6–5. But CCAA leading hitter Mikaela Ferreira's RBI double helped Stanislaus retake the lead in the sixth, 7–6.

Clay's run-scoring single in the seventh forced extra innings. That's where Alcayaga led off the ninth with a double to deep right. Mendoza moved her to third before White's fly ball completed the Otter sweep.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Emma Mendoza's double scored Gracie Strycula for the final score in the 9–0, run-rule win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Jaedyn White's sac fly plated Ally Alcayaga with the walkoff run in the ninth inning.

IN A CLASS BY HERSELF… Mackenzie Willis fanned 11 batters Saturday to break the CSUMB single-season record with 169. She'll spend the rest of the season moving up the Otter career record list. She finished played Saturday at No. 7. Next up is Diane Ortiz, who fanned 208 over the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… CSUMB earned its second doubleheader sweep of the season with Saturday's wins over Stanislaus State. The Otters also swept San Francisco State on Feb. 25.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION… CSUMB's 17 runs scored Saturday were its most in a doubleheader since beating Cal State East Bay 15–1 and 11–5 on Mar. 9, 2019.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Oli Perez (10), Emma Mendoza 2 (2, 3). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Anastacia Alba (2).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jackie Perales (4), Ally Alcayaga (7), Emma Mendoza (4), Haylee Clay (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Emma Mendoza (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a 4-game series at Cal State San Bernardino Apr. 19–20. CSUMB returns home to close the regular season against Cal State Dominguez Hills Apr. 26–27.
