Otters Take Opener, Drop Series To Coyotes

Willis wins 13th game; Alcayaga lifts avg. over .400

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played brilliantly in the opener, but host Cal State San Bernardino rallied to win the series by taking 3-of-4 games at Coyote Field.

CSUMB took Game 1 by a 7–2 score. But San Bernardino responded by taking the final three by scores of 14–6, 9–1 and 5–0.

Freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) was solid in the opening game win, scattering five hits and striking out nine to win her 13th game of the season. Catcher Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) went 5-for-10 in the series, including her team-leading fifth home run of the season. to lifter her batting average to .404 for the season.

Sophomore outfielder Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) also hd five hits in the series (5-for-14) while fellow sophomore Jackie Perales (Aanheim/Sunny Hills HS) went 3-for-9 with a double.

Willis, who already holds the CSUMB single-season record with 182 strikeouts, moved to with 18 strikeouts of becoming the seventh pitcher in Otter history to record 200 strikeouts in a career.

Alcayaga, who tied Oli Perez (Ceres HS) and Julia Garcia for the No. 6 spot on the Otter career list with her 18th home run, also put herself in position to become just the ninth different Otter to hit .400 in a season.

The Otters return home to host Cal State Dominguez Hills for a 4-game series to close their 2024 campaign Friday and Saturday, Apr. 26–27 at the Otter Sportd Complex.
