Otters, Toros Trade Run-Rule Wins

Willis tosses 1-hitter, Ally Alcayaga homers twice in Game 1 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — One look at the final scores was all you needed to know that the wind was blowing out at the Otters Sports Complex Friday, where Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills traded run-rule victories.

The Otters took the opener, 8–0 in five innings. Dominguez Hills took the nightcap, 10–1, also in five.

Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) and Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) were on fire for CSUMB in the opener. A bloop single that just eluded an over-the-should catch by Oli Perez (Ceres HS) in the first inning was all that stood between Willis and a perfect game. The freshman righty fanned eight batters for her 14th win of the season.

Alcayaga, meanwhile, tied the school record with 10 total bases, going 3-for-3 with a double and the first 2-homer game of her career. She scored three runs and drove in four.

The Otters blew the game open with a 3-run fourth, highlighted by Anastacia Alba's (Watsonville HS) RBI double and a 2-run shot from Alcayaga. Alcayaga added another 2-run bomb off the light pole in left center in the fifth before Haylee Clay (Whittier/La Serna HS) and Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) followed with RBI doubles to complete the win.

The Toro offense found its revenge in the nightcap. Mariah Ramirez and Kianna Abellera hit 2-run homers in the first to stake the Toros to an early lead. Ally Alcayaga's RBI single in the bottom of the inning got one run back, but homers from Ramirez, Kaylee Hull and Maiya Lopez brought home six more in the second.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Abby Alcayaga doubled into the left field corner to plate Haylee Clay with the eighth run to complete the run-rule victory.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Maiya Lopez hit a 2-run home run to cap a 6-run second, giving the Toros a 10–1 lead.

WILLIS NINE AWAY FROM 200… With nine strikeouts Friday, Mackenzie Willis brought her season total to 191. That's already the CSUMB single-season record, putting her nine away from becoming just the seventh player in Otter history to post 200 career strikeouts.

ALCAYAGA TIES HOME RUN, TOTAL BASE RECORDS… With two home runs and 10 total bases, Ally Alcayaga tied a pair of Otter records in Friday's Game 1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Her 10 total bases tied the mark set by Julia Garcia against UC San Diego in 2017 and matched by Oli Perez last Apr. 29 at Cal Poly Humboldt. She became the 17th different Otter to hit two homers in a game and the first since her sister Abby Alcayaga did it in a win over Montana State Billings on Mar. 23.

ALCAYAGA EYES .400… Ally Alcayaga lifted her batting average to .426 by finishing Friday's doubleheader 4-for-5. She is looking to become the just the ninth different Otter to hit .400 for a season and the first since Julia Garcia hit .451 while winning the CCAA triple crown in 2017.

ALL ON THE LINE… The Otters can spoil Cal State Dominguez Hills' shot at the CCAA title by winning at least one game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Toros need to win twice and have Sonoma State lose twice to San Francisco State to wear the crown.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jackie Perales (5), Anastacia Alba (10), Ally Alcayaga (8), Oli Perez 2 (10, 11), Abby Alcayaga (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Ally Alcayaga 2 (6, 7).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2024 campaign with a doubleheader against the Toros Saturday at 11 a.m.
