Clutch Perez Double Earns Split With Cougars

Otters defeat No. 23 San Marcos 2-1, fall in nightcap 5-2

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — A 2-out, RBI double by Oli Perez (Ceres HS) plated Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) in the eighth inning to lift Cal State Monterey Bay to a 2–1 victory and a doubleheader split with No. 23 Cal State San Marcos Saturday at the CSUSM Softball Field.

San Marcos scored runs in the first two innings of the nightcap and held on for the 5–2 victory.

Perez's liner into the left field corner made a winner of freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS), who tossed 2 2/3 innings of 1-hit, shutout relief for her 10th victory. Junior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) was sharp in the starting role, scattering four hits and one run over 5 1/3.

The Cougars put single runs on the board in the first and second innings of Game 2 against starter Kelsey Alcantara (Corona/Santiago HS). Madrigal came on in the third and kept the Otters in the game.

A Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) RBI single and a Perez sac fly got the Otters to within 3–2 late. But a wild pitch and an error allowed San Marcos to plate a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to seal the win.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Mackenzie Willis fanned cleanup hitter Jillian Albayati for the final out to end the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Klarissa Muñoz scored on an error in the sixth inning to increase the CSUSM lead to 5–2.

A PERFECT 10… Mackenzie Willis earned her 10th victory of the season with 2 2/3 innings of 1-hit, shutout relief in Saturday's opener at Cal State San Marcos. She becomes the 15th pitcher in Otter history to post 10 wins in a season and the first freshman since Hayley set the Otter freshman record with 29 wins in 2017.

PEREZ TOP 10 IN DOUBLES… Oli Perez's game-winning double in Saturday's opener at Cal State San Marcos was the 27th of her career, tying her with Jayme Stark (2015–18) for No. 10 on the Otter career doubles list.

WILLIS RECORD WATCH… Throwing just a few inning of relief Saturday, Mackenzie Willis added just one strikeout to her season total, which now sits at 151. She needs 13 more strikeouts to break the Otter single-season record of 163 set by Cassie Gasper last season.
