Otters Bats Quiet In Doubleheader Sweep

CSUMB falls to East Bay, 5-4 and 4-1

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't come up with the big hits when it needed them and Cal State East Bay did to earn a 5–4, 4–1 sweep of the Otters Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The hit totals for both teams were identical: Eight hits each in the opener and six hits each in the nightcap. But it's when the hits came that mattered. CSUMB managed just two run-scoring knocks on the day, pinch-hit doubles that scored runners from first base in Game 1 from Nani Areola (Oaks Christian HS) and in Game 2 from Aniya Lawson (Fairfield/Vanden HS).

The Otters went down 4–0 in the opener before loading the bases with nobody out in the fifth. All three runs came around to score on wild pitches to pull CSUMB to within a run.

The teams traded runs in the sixth before Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) singled to lead off the seventh. But Oli Perez popped up her sac bunt attempt and the potential rally fizzled.

CSUMB had a chance to jump on top early in the nightcap when Alcayaga led off the second inning by doubling off the fence in left. She moved to third on a passed ball, but three Otter hitters couldn't bring her home.

East Bay then took the lead when a dropped pop fly near home plate sparked a 3–run Pioneer third. The Otters left runners in scoring position three times while trying to come back.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Emily Vanderbilt flew out to center for the final out with the tying run on second.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Aneliese Garcia hit her fourth home run of the series to extend the East Bay lead to 4–0 in the fifth. The Otters never got the potential tying run as far as the on deck circle after that.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Aniya Lawson's pinch-hit, RBI double in the seventh inning of Game 2 was the first of her collegiate career.

WILLIS REACHES THE CENTURY MARK… Mackenzie Willis fanned Ysabella Cortez leading off the sixth inning to record her 100th strikeout of the season. She is the first Otter freshman to do it since Hayley Fein struck out a CSUMB freshman record 145 batters in 2017.
