Otters Drop Two At Sonoma

Willis fans 10 in opener, Alba doubles twice

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey bay couldn't take advantage of a pair of strong pitching starts as host Sonoma State rallied from behind twice to sweep a doubleheader, 4–3 (8 inn.) and 6–4 Friday afternoon at Seawolf Field.

Freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the opener, but her offense managed just four hits in an eventual extra-innings defeat. Willis fanned 10 to increase her CCAA strikeout lead with 110 and allowed five hits.

A see-saw nightcap was up for grabs until a 2-out error opened the door on a 3–run Sonoma fifth inning that broke a 3–3 tie. Senior Kelsey Alcantara (Corona/Santiago HS) allowed just two earned runs in the hard-luck decision.

Offensively, junior third baseman Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS/Chico State) led the way with RBI doubles in both games. Shortstop Oli Perez (Ceres HS) also hit safely in both games.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Giana Hays' walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth plated Anna Zoia-Buescher.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… A 2-out error in the fifth inning opened the door on a 3-run inning that broke a 3–3 tie.

WILLIS JUMPS SIX SPORTS ON STRIKEOUT LIST… With 10 Ks Friday at Sonoma State, Mackenzie Willis jumped six spots from No. 19 to No. 13 on the Otter season strikeouts list with 110. She needs 14 more to catch Lindsay Clarkson's 2013 season (124) for a spot in the Top 10.

WILLIS ALSO No. 13 ON CAREER K LIST… With 10 Ks Friday at Sonoma State, Mackenzie Willis jumped to No. 13 on the Otter career strikeouts list with 110. She is 23 strikeouts away from a spot in the career Top 10.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba (7). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set at Sonoma State with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

GO OTTERS!
