Otters, Pioneers Split Pitching Gems

Mackenzie Willis fans nine in 1-hitter

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay received a 1–hit gem from freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) to earn a doubleheader split with Cal State East Bay Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB took the opener, 3–1. East Bay rallied for a 10–1 win in the nightcap.

Willis allowed only a third inning single, striking out nine against no walks to improve to 6–4 on the season. An RBI double by Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) and a 2–run homer from Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) staked Willis to a 3–0 lead in the first.
East Bay spoiled the no-hitter and the shutout by taking advantage of a 2–out error and a single in the third inning. Willis was perfect other than that.

But the East Bay pitching took over from there. The Pioneers shutout the Otters for the next 10 2/3 innings until Karizma Ruiz's (Alisal HS) RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 2 plated Alcayaga to break up the shutout.

East Bay scored all of the runs it would need in the first inning of the nightcap, thanks mostly to three walks, an error and a wild pitch. The Pioneers added three home runs as they scored four in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game away.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Ally Alcayaga's 2–run homer made it 3–0 Otters in the first inning. East Bay never brought the tying run to the plate as Mackenzie Willis retired the final 13 Pioneers in order.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Mariah Ayala scored on a wild pitch to cap a 3–run East Bay first. The Otters never brought the tying run to the plate.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Karizma Ruiz became the 17th Otter to collect a hit this season with a pinch-hit, RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 2. It was the first RBI of her collegiate career.

ALCAYAGA UP TO 7TH IN HOME RUNS… Ally Alcayaga hit the 17th home run of her Otter career in the first inning of Game 1 Friday, tying her with Courtney Hennings for No. 7 on the Otter career list. Next up is Julia Garcia with 18.

WILLIS EYES CENTURY MARK… Freshman Mackenzie Willis fanned nine Pioneers Friday to bring her total to 94 in 2024. She needs six more to become the 10th different Otter pitcher to fan 100 in a season. She is looking to become the first Otter freshman to do it since Hayley Fein struck out a CSUMB freshman record 145 batters in 2017.
