Soriano’s Sprint Earns Otter Split With Chico

Faith Soriano hits walk-off, inside the park home run in opener

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned a split of its Saturday doubleheader with Chico State, thanks to a walk-off, inside-the-park home run by sophomore Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School For Girls) in the eighth inning of the opener. The Otters took that game 1–0 before falling 2–0 in a rain-shortened nightcap.

Freshman hurler Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) tossed a 4-hit shutout in the Game 1, and the Otters needed every pitch of that effort as they continued to struggle finding the clutch hit. CSUMB left 11 runners on base.
  Soriano made her a winner with one out in the eighth when she drove a ball deep to the gap in left center. Left fielder Hannah Levy couldn't track it down as she crashed into the fence. Center fielder Mia Santos chased down the carom and threw to third to get Soriano, but she had already blown past the bag and scored easily.

Game 2 saw bad luck for the Otters, who had a golden opportunity to earn a series split cut short due to rain.

Chico scored twice off starter Kelsey Alcantara in the third inning. Junior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) came in to shut the door with 3 1/3 innings of 2-hit, shutout relief, but the Otter offense couldn't find the clutch hit needed to get back in the game.

The Otters loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth for Chico State transfer Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) when the umpires stopped the game due to rain. After a 20-minute delay, they called the game and Chico was credited with the rain-shortened victory.
 

GAMES 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Faith Soriano sprinted around the bases for a walk-off, inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… The umpires called the game on account of rain with the bases loaded and CSUMB trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning.

AND THEN WAS ONE… With seven strikeouts Saturday, Mackenzie Willis moved into the No. 2 spot on the Otter single-season strikeout list with 150. She needs 14 more to break the Otter record of 163 set by Cassie Gasper last season.

FEELING STRANDED… The Otters stranded 44 runners on base in the 4-game series with Chico, an average of 11 left on base per game. They stranded double-digit runners in all four games.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road to play a 4-game series at defending NCAA West Region champion Cal State San Marcos Apr. 5–6. CSUMB returns home to host Stanislaus State Apr. 12–13.
