Otters Finish Home Tournament With 3–2 Record

Otters close play with wins over Biola, MSUB and 1-0 loss to No. 20 CUI

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team played its best softball of the season over the weekend, finishing the Otter Invitational with a 3–2 record. The Otters closed play by beating Biola 8–5 and Montana State Billings 7–1 late Saturday before dropping an instant classic to No. 20 Concordia University 1–0 Sunday afternoon in the tournament finale.

Junior Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) was the Otter pitching star. She tossed a complete game 4-hitter to beat Billings Saturday. Sunday, a sixth-inning home spoiled what otherwise was a masterpiece in the 1–0 loss to nationally-ranked Concordia.

Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) allowed just two runs over six innings to earn the win in the Biola game.

At the plate, sophomore Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) lifted her batting average to .328 by going 9-for-15 (.600) in five tournament games. She was a perfect 3-for-3 Sunday against Concordia.

Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) finished tournament play 6-for-14 (.429) to lift her batting average to a team-leading .377. She collected two doubles and her fourth home run of the season amongst her six hits.

Her twin sister Abby Alcayaga went 5-for-14 with a double and a pair of home runs.

The Otters return to CCAA action Mar. 29–30 when they host Chico State for a 4-game series. The action begins with a Friday  (Mar. 29) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
