Otters Drop Opener Before The Rains

Chico takes Game 1, 4-2; Game 2 halted in second inning

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay dropped the opening game of its series with Chico State, 4–2, before the rains came and halted Game 2 Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The nightcap was halted with Chico leading 2–0 in the top of the second inning.

Freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) fanned the first six batters of the game and finished with nine strikeouts in just four innings of work. She allowed just two hits, but those were a single followed by an Ali Clark home run that staked Chico to a 2–0 lead in the fourth.

Kelsey Alcantara came in to pitch the fifth and gave up a 2-run double in the seventh, allowing the Wildcats to double their lead. Those runs proved critical as freshman Emily Vanderbilt (Napa/Vintage HS) delivered a 2-run single of her own in the bottom of the seventh to get CSUMB back to within 4–2.

Reliever Katelyn Oldwin got out of the jam by fanning Ally Alcayaga, who represented the winning run, for the final out.

THE WAS OVER WHEN… Chico Reliever Katelyn Oldwin got a strikeout for the final out with the potential winning run at bat.

AND THEN WERE THREE… With nine strikeouts Friday, Mackenzie Willis from No. 7 to No. 4 on the Otter single–season strikeout list with 143. That leaves just three players between her and the Otter record: Hayley Fein (145 in 2017), Jessica Boyle (146 in 2007) and Cassie Gasper (163 in 2023).

SAYING HELLO TO SOME OLD FRIENDS… Otter third baseman Anastacia Alba transferred to CSUMB from Chico State for the 2024 season. She welcomed her old teammates to town by going 2-for-4.

OTTERS IN A PINCH… Emily Vanderbilt's 2-run single in the seventh inning lifted the Otters to an even .300 batting average (12-for-40) in pinch hitting opportunities this season. She became the 10th different Otter to collect a pinch hit in 2024.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters resume their 4-game set against Chico State with a continuation of Friday's halted game at 10:30 a.m.
