Otters Open Home Tournament With Win Over Biola

Willis fans 11, Perez doubles and homers in 7-1 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay opened its own Otter Invitational Tournament with a 7–1 win over Biola University Thursday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) struck out 11 in a complete game 2-hitter for her seventh win of the season. Shortstop Oli Perez (Ceres HS) doubled and homered to lead the season–high 11-hit attack.

Fans saw a pitching duel between Willis and Biola senior Kayla Bousquette for three innings. Perez changed the pace by leading off the fourth with a double. Sophomore Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) tripled her home to open the floodgates on a 4-run inning.

Perez opened the fifth with a no-doubt homer to left center to extend the lead to 5–0. Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) laced a 2-run single down the left field line in the sixth to close the Otter scoreline.

All the run support was way more than Willis needed. A bloop double that fell just between the third baseman and left fielder in the third was the only hit she surrendered through six innings. Reserve outfielder Maddie Riley spoiled the shutout with a 2-out double in the seventh.
 

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Leah Madden's RBI single made it 3–0 Otters in the fourth inning. Biola never got the tying run to the on-deck circle after that.

MACKENZIE RUNS ANOTHER 10K… Mackenzie Willis fanned 11 Biola batters Thursday, marking the fifth time this season she has struck out at least 10 batters in a game. That is the CSUMB record for a single season and two shy of Lindsey Clarkson's CSUMB career record of seven 10-plus strikeout games.

PEREZ TIES HENNINGS IN HOMERS… Oli Perez hit her 17th career home run in Thursday's 7–1 win over Biola. That ties her with Courtney Hennings for No. 7 on the Otter career home run list. Next up is Julia Garcia, who hit 18 through the 2017 and 2018 seasons

WILLIS JOINS SINGLE SEASON K TOP 10… Freshman Mackenzie Willis moved from 13th all the way up to No. 10 on the Otter single season strikeout list with her 11K performance in Thursday's win over Biola. Willis now owns 126 strikeouts. Another 10K effort Friday would vault her all the way up to No. 5 on that list.

WILLIS NEARS CAREER K TOP 10… Freshman Mackenzie Willis moved to within seven strikeouts of the Otter career Top 10 Thursday, when her 11 Ks lifted her Otter total to 126. Celeste Villagrana (2018–19) and Jensen Main (2022) share the No. 9 spot with 133.
