Otters Edged in Series Opener Against Point Loma, 2-1

CSUMB collects eight hits but strands 13 in the loss

SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 14-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped its series opener against No. 21 Point Loma, 2-1, Thursday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters (3-2) out-hit the Sea Lions (2-1) 8-7 but ultimately fell victim to 13 stranded runners.

The 1-2 combo of Chase Lindemann and Brady Miguel atop the lineup was credited with two hits apiece as Lindemann batted 2-for-4 and Miguel ended his night 2-for-5.

CSUMB starter Nate Rohlicek (1-1) was tagged with the loss. The right-hander scattered five hits and allowed two runs while striking out five in four innings.

The bullpen for the Otters held firm as they combined to allow just two hits and no runs in five innings of work.

The Otters struck first in the ballgame, plating a solo run in the third inning. After a Jacob Dressler walk and a Lindemann hit-by-pitch, an infield error off the bat of KW Quilici loaded the bases for Jaden Sheppard, who drew the walk to score Dressler. Sheppard had two walks in the contest.

Point Loma scored their two runs the very next inning as a double from Miller Durham plated Jack Malone and then a sac bunt from Will Pope scored Hunter Otjen, which proved to be the winning run.

CSUMB had runners in scoring position in the final two innings but were unable to extend the ballgame or take the lead.

The two squads will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one of the twin-bill is scheduled for 2 p.m.
