Bats Come Alive In Sweep of Gators

Otters post season highs for runs and hits in 4-0, 8-3 wins

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball bats came alive Sunday to support a pair of stellar pitching performances as the Otters swept San Francisco State 4–0 and 8–3 at the Otter Sports Complex.

The bats really came to play in the nightcap, when the Otters exploded for season highs of eight runs and 11 hits. But the explosion began late in the opener, when consecutive 2–out doubles by Sunny Hills High School products Jackie Perales and Jessica Kim extended the Otter lead to 3–0 in the sixth inning. Another clutch RBI single from Anastacia Alba (Watsonville HS) capped the scoring in the seventh.

That was more than enough support for freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) who threw her first complete game shutout at the collegiate level, allowing just two hits while strikeout out seven.

The nightcap saw an even more dominating pitching performance from senior Kelsey Alcantara (Corona/Santiago HS), who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. She picked up her first Otter win, allowing two hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Her offense gave her more than ample support, with doubles by Alba, Lauren Bullis (Bishop Amat HS) and Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) pacing the 11–hit onslaught. Perales delivered the key hit when her 2–out, 2–run single in the fourth inning snapped a scoreless tie and set the wheels in motion.

Back-to-back doubles from Bullis and Escalante drove in three runs in a 5–run fifth inning that broke the game open.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Mackenzie Willis fanned Lexi Holihan with runners on the corners to end the fourth inning. The Gators didn't get another base runner until there were two outs in the seventh inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Anastacia Alba's RBI single capped a 5–run Otter fifth that made it 8–0.

HOME SWEET ROAD… The Otter picked up their first series win of the season playing as the "road" team at the Otter Sports Complex this weekend. The games originally were scheduled to be played in San Francisco but unplayable field conditions forced the venue change.

WILLIS TAKE NCAA LEAD IN STRIKEOUTS… With seven more punchouts Sunday versus San Francisco State, Mackenzie Willis took over the NCAA Division II lead with 78 strikeouts. With the season barely past the quarter pole, she is well on her way to challenging the CSUMB record of 163 strikeouts in a season set in 2023 by CCAA Pitcher of the Year Cassie Gasper.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba (3), Jackie Perales (3), Jessica Kim (1). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Anastacia Alba (4), Ellie Escalante (3). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters take a break from CCAA play to host Academy of Art University for a nonconference doubleheader Saturday (Mar. 2), with first pitch scheduled for noon.
