Willis, Perez Lead Otters To Split With Gators

Freshman fans 11 in opener; Perez hits second homer

SEASIDE, Calif. — Freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) did not allow and hit and Oli Perez (Ceres HS) doubled and homered to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a split with San Francisco State Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Willis tossed 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball in CSUMB's 5–4 win in the opener. But the Gators rallied for three unanswered runs to come back for a 3–2 win in the nightcap.

The games originally were scheduled to be played in San Francisco, but unplayable field conditions forced the move to CSUMB.

Willis didn't allow a hit in Game 1, but came out after walking the bases loaded in the sixth inning. San Francisco's first hit came off reliever Kelsey Alcantara and drew the Gators to within 3–2.

Perez restored CSUMB's 3–run lead with a laser beam to dead center for her second home run of the season. But the Gators rallied for two more in the home half of the seventh before Willis reentered to fan Daniella Guerrera to end the game.

CSUMB scored twice in the third inning to stake Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) to an early lead. Haylee Clay's (Whittier/La Serna HS) sac fly drove in the first run while a second came in via a throwing error on the play.

But that was all SFSU freshman starter Elise Roy would yield, as she didn't allow a hit over the final four innings, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters she faced.

The Gator offense, meanwhile, scratched out three runs with an RBI grounder in the third and 2–out singles in the fourth and fifth.

Willis came on in relief and struck out three of the four batters she faced to keep the Otters in it, but the offense went quietly.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Mackenzie Willis fanned Daniella Guerrera for the final out with the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… SFSU pitcher Elise Roy induced a popup double play back to the circle for the final two outs.

PEREZ UP TO 12TH IN DOUBLES… Oli Perez moved up to the No. 12 spot on the Otter career doubles list when she hit her 25th two-bagger Saturday against San Francisco State. She needs one more to tie Jackie Serna (2011–12) for 11th and two more to catch Jayme Stark (2015–18) for 10th.

PEREZ UP TO 8TH ON HR LIST… Oli Perez hit her 16th career home in Game 1 Saturday, moving her into a tie for the No. 8 spot on the Otter career home run list. Her next home run will tie Courtney Hennings (2016–19) for No. 7.

WILLIS HITS DOUBLE FIGURES…AGAIN… Freshman Mackenzie Willis fanned 11 Gators in Saturday's opener, marking her third game with 10 or more strikeouts in seven collegiate starts. The 11 Ks tie her for No. 7 in the CSUMB record book for most strikeouts in a game. She joins Lindsey Clarkson and Jessica Boyle as the only Otters to fan 11 or more batters in a game twice

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Oli Perez (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (2).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ellie Escalante (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against San Francisco State with a doubleheader Sunday at noon.

GO OTTERS!
