Otters Split Again Despite Dramatic Homer

Otters beat Humboldt in opener, 3-2 but fall in extras in the nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — A dramatic home run in the bottom of the seventh forced extras in the nightcap, but Cal State Monterey Bay ultimately settled for a second consecutive split with Cal Poly Humboldt while dodging raindrops at the Otter Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

CSUMB won the opener, 3–2, behind an eight–strikeout performance from freshman Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS), before falling 5–3 in eight innings in Game 2.

Kieley Ganaden's (North Salinas HS) pinch hit sac fly plated Oli Perez (Ceres) HS to break a 2–2 tie in the fifth inning of the opener. Willis, with a perfect relief from Kelsey Alcantara (Corona/Santiago HS), slammed the door on the Lumberjacks to secure the win.

With Otter bats mostly silent, Game 2 appeared to be lost when Hailee Moore scored on a wild pitch to extend Humboldt's lead to 3–1 in the seventh. Things looked even more bleak when Humboldt starter Vanessa Richie retired the first two Otters on harmless ground balls.

But freshman Emily Vanderbilt (Napa/Vintage HS), making her first collegiate appearance, drew a full-count walk to keep the game alive. On came another pinch hitter, junior Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS), who fouled off three pitches, working her count to 3–2 when the rain came to force a 10–minute delay.

When play resumed, Alcayaga hammered the first pitch she saw to dead center to tie the game at 3–3.

Humboldt used a leadoff walk, a double and a wild pitch to restore its 2–run lead in the top of the eighth. The Otters responded with three line drive outs in the home half.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kelsey Alcantara coaxed a grounder from Kristin Ingram for the final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hailee Moore scored on a wild pitch to extend Humboldt's lead to 5–3 in the eighth. The Otters couldn't get the tying run to the plate in the home half.

WILLIS's DOUBLE FIGURES STEAK ENDS…BARELY… Freshman Mackenzie Willis just missed becoming the first Otter to post double–figure strikeout games three times in a row when she finished Saturday's Game 1 win over Cal Poly Humboldt with eight Ks in 6.0 innings. Nevertheless, she joined Cassie Gasper as the only Otters ever to fan double digit batters in consecutive games. Gasper did it with 10 K efforts against Menlo College and Chico State Feb. 2–7, 2020.

WILLIS LEADS THE CCAA… Mackenzie Willis will enter the week leading the CCAA in strikeouts by a wide margin. Her 64 Ks are 36 more than the next player on the list while her 9.1 strikeouts per seven innings also makes her the only qualifying pitcher in the conference averaging more than a strikeout per inning

PEREZ DOUBLES THE FUN… Oli Perez hit a pair of doubles in the series versus Cal Poly Humboldt and enters the week tied for the CCAA lead in that category with four on the season.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jaedyn White (3). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Abby Alcayaga (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a 4–set at San Francisco State Feb. 23–24.
