Otters Open CCAA Play With Split

Willis fans 10, Perez adds homer and two doubles

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Poly Humboldt traded 5–run innings to earn a split of their CCAA–opening doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters held off a late Humboldt rally to take the opener, 6–5, before the Lumberjacks did the same to win the nightcap, 5–3.

Oli Perez (Ceres HS) doubled and homered in support of a 10–strikeout effort from freshman pitcher Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) to lead the way in Game 1. Senior Kelsey Alcantara (Corona/Santiago HS) threw 5 1/3 innings of 2–hit, shutout relief in the nightcap.

Perez staked CSUMB to a lead it wouldn't relinquish with a solo homer, her first of the season, in the second inning of the opener. She added an RBI double, as did pinch hitter Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS), whose 2–run shot off the third base bag capped a 5–run Otter fourth.

Humboldt pulled to within a run on a Kristin Ingram pinch–hit homer in the seventh before Alcantara came on to wrangle the final out for her first Otter save.

Starting pitcher Alyssa Smokey hit a 3–run homer to cap Humboldt's 5–run second in game two. Alcantara quieted the Lumberjack bats after that with more masterful relief work.

While the Otter offense scratched and clawed its way back into the game with single markers in the second, fifth and sixth innings, the big hit eluded CSUMB all game. The Otters stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings, going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the game.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kelsey Alcantara coaxed cleanup hitter Vanessa Saltos to fly to left for the final out with the potential tying run on second base.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Humboldt starter Alyssa Smokey completed her first 1-2-3 inning of the day, setting the Otters down in order in the seventh inning.

WELCOME TO THE TOP 10… Oli Perez hit her 15th career homer in the Game 1 win over Cal Poly Humboldt Friday, moving her into a tie for ninth on the Otter career home run list. She is tied with teammate Ally Alcayaga and former All–American Jamie Moon (2009–12).

PEREZ PASSES PEREZ IN DOUBLES… Oli Perez doubled in both games versus Cal Poly Humboldt Friday to slip past former teammate Ivana Perez into 13th on the Otter career doubles list with 24. She will tie former All–American Julia Garcia (2017–18) for No. 12 with her next double.

WILLIS HITS DOUBLE FIGURES…AGAIN… Freshman Mackenzie Willis followed her 13 K performance against Academy of Art last weekend with 10 more strikeouts in Friday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt. She joins Cassie Gasper as the only Otters ever to fan double digit batters in consecutive games. Gasper did it with 10 K efforts against Menlo College and Chico State Feb. 2–7, 2020.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (1), Ellie Escalante (1), Oli Perez (3). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (1).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jackie Perales (2), Oli Perez (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against Humboldt with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.

GO OTTERS!
