Otters Close North Bay Challenge With Win

Areola goes yard, Willis fans 13 in 4-3 win over ArtU

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Freshmen Mackenzie Willis (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas HS) and Nani Areola (Oaks Christian HS) led Cal State Monterey Bay to a thrilling 4–3, 9–inning win over Academy of Art Sunday at Santa Rosa JC to close play at the North Bay Challenge.

Areola hit her first collegiate home run, a 3–run bomb in the second inning, to pace the Otter offense. Willis then came in to shut the door, allowing just one run while striking out 13 in 6 1/3 innings of relief.

The teams went to extra innings and the international tie-breaker after seven innings tied at 3–3. The Otters sacrificed successfully in the eighth but couldn't bring the go-ahead run home.

They loaded the bases in the ninth for Haylee Clay (Whittier/La Serna HS), who hit what looked like a 2–run single up the middle. Urban Knight second baseman Audrey Allen made a diving stop to get the force at second, but they had no chance to turn two, allowing pinch runner Lauren Albrent (Ventura/Buena HS) to score what proved to be the winning run.

Willis never allowed Art to get is runners off second base in extras, striking out two in both the eighth and the ninth to secure the victory.

In addition to Areola, who walked twice in addition to her bomb, freshman Jaedyn White (Fairfield/Rodriguez HS) came off the bench to record a pair of hits.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Mackenzie Willis coaxed Cailee Grayhorse–Pupecki to foul out to third for the final out.

YOU CAN'T SPELL MACKENZIE WITHOUT A K… Mackenzie Willis needed just 6 1/3 innings to fan 13 Urban Knights Sunday afternoon,. That mark ranks No. 4 all–time in the Otter record book.

AND A FRESHMAN SHALL LEAD THEM… It's still early, but Mackenzie Willis has raced to a huge lead in the CCAA strikeout race. She leads the league with 42 Ks. Nobody else has more than 19.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Mackenzie Willis (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to open their CCAA schedule by hosting Cal Poly Humboldt for a 4–game set Feb. 16–17.
