Long Ball Powers Otters to Opening Day Win

CSUMB downs Azusa Pacific, 9-4

SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 14-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team used four home runs to power to a 9-4 opening day victory over Azusa Pacific Thursday afternoon.

JJ Engman led the offensive onslaught with two home runs, driving in three and scoring three times. He banged out three of the Otters' 12 hits.

Cole Murchison had two hits, including a three-run home run, while KW Quilici was 2-for-5 with a solo shot and two runs scored. His home run was a career first from Quilici in an Otter uniform.

Nate Rohlicek was credited with the win. On a pitch count, the right-hander tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Ryan Io and Mitchell Nagel combined to toss three innings of scoreless relief.

Engman started the scoring for CSUMB with a two-run shot in the third inning. He added a solo homer in the eighth.

The Otters extended their lead in the fifth when Brady Miguel drove in Dominic Felice on a sharp single through the right side of the infield. Chase Lindemann gave CSUMB a 4-0 lead on a bases loaded walk.

After Azusa Pacific cut the lead to one at 4-3, Murchison gave the Otters more breathing room with a three-run homer in the seventh.

The power surge continued in the eighth inning as Engman and Quilici went back-to-back to conclude the CSUMB scoring.

The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The front end of the twin-bill is slated to start at Noon.
