Offense Can't Find Groove In Loss To L.A.

Otters score season-low 45 points in 64-45 defeat

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't find an offensive rhythm of any kind Saturday as Cal State L.A. grinded out a 64-45 win over the Otters Saturday in L.A.'s University Gym.

Freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) was the only Otter to reach double figures, scoring 11 points. Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) grabbed eight rebounds and Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) passed three assists.

The Otters kept things close in the first half and went into the break trailing just 25-20. But a 9-2 L.A. run midway through the second half allowed the Golden Eagles to open a 52-34 lead and CSUMB never was able to get back within striking distance.

For what it's worth, the Otter defense held L.A. to its second-lowest opponent total of the season at 64 points. They limited the Golden Eagles to 1-of-13 from long range while holding them to 42 percent from the floor and forcing 15 turnovers, both the second-best outputs of the season for CSUMB's defense.

But the Otter offense shot season lows of 26 percent from the floor and 14 percent from beyond the arc while turning the ball over a season-high 24 times to undue their solid defensive effort.

The Otters return home to open a 4-game homestand Thursday (Dec. 12) when future CCAA member UC Merced visits The Kelp Bed for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
