Last Second Shot Doesn’t Fall, Otters Lose In OT

Bilello, Mora score career highs in 69-68 loss to Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. — A game featuring two big comebacks ended in heartbreak for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team as Stanislaus State took a 69–68 decision in overtime Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

Stanislaus took its final lead with three seconds remaining when Will Chavarin sank a pair of free throws. The Otters had a chance to win at the as the clock struck zeroes, but Jaden Tengan's (Santa Clarita Christian) long-range 3-pointer rimmed out as the horn sounded.

CSUMB appeared to take control midway through the second half, opening its biggest lead at 43–32 on a Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) 3-ball with 12:08 remaining. But the Otters went ice cold and the Warriors turned red-hot from that moment.

Stanislaus plugged away with a 22–4 run that produced its biggest advantage at 54–46 with less than two minutes to play. That's when CSUMB once again found its groove, with four different Otters scoring in a 13–5 closing burst. Bilello's turn-around jumper with two seconds left completed the comeback and forced overtime.

Bilello and freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Vermont) each scored a career-high 19 points to lead all scorers. Tengan added 10 points and a career-high nine assists. Chavarin led Stanislaus with 18.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game wasn't statistically over until Jaden Tengan's last-ditch 3-point attempt rimmed out at the horn.

TENGAN LENDS A HAND… Jaden Tengan's nine assists rank No. 10 in the Otter record book for a single game. Only four Otters — Darryl Anderson, D'Shon Cannon and Will Brown — ever passed more against an NCAA Division II opponent. No Otter has passed more since Steve Monreal dished 10 dimes against (then NAIA member) Concordia-Irvine on Dec. 13, 2008.

BILELLO AND MORA GO HIGH… Sophomore Joey Bilello and freshman Michael Mora both reached career scoring highs with 19 points Saturday against Stanislaus State. Bilello's previous high was 15 points set twice previously, including last week's win over UC Merced. Mora's previous best was 15 in the season-opener against Western Oregon. Mora, for good measure, chipped in a career-high eight rebounds.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joey Bilello/Michael Mora 19; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora 8; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 9; BLOCKS: Blake Jones 2; STEALS: Javon Johnson/Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will ring in 2025 by hosting Chico State Thursday (Jan. 2) for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
