Chico Rallies Late, Spoils Otter Upset Bid

Wildcats rally from 14 down for 78-74 win

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay led for most of the game, but Chico State rallied late to remain undefeated in CCAA play with a 78–74 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters got a balanced effort on both ends of the floor, led by senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Jaden Tengan (Santa Clarita Christian) added 10 points. Javon Johnson (De la Salle HS), Konner Baroni (Placer HS) and Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Aust) each chipped in nine points.

Chico scored the first point of the game via a free throw, but the next 30 minutes belonged to the Otters, who steadily grew their lead to as many as 14 points. The Wildcats chipped away late in the first half and midway through the second until CCAA leading scorer Jojo Murphy caught fire.

Murphy's 3-pointer with seven minutes remaining put Chico on top, 67–65 and his trey with 2:37 to play snapped a 70–70 tie. CSUMB had two possessions to tie but could pull no closer than one point before a Miles Daniels free throw with two seconds left sealed the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday's game wasn't over until Miles Daniels sank a free throw with two seconds left to account for the final point.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With four blocks Thursday versus Chico State, the Otters lifted the season total to 44 less than half way through the schedule. That already ranks No. 20 on the CSUMB single-season list. At their current pace, they will break the school record of 109 set by the 2005-06 team.

MORA REACHES THE CENTURY MARK: With seven points Thursday versus Chico State, freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto) went over the century with 103 points so far. His 10.3 ppg average ranks second on the team.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: With 12 assists and 10 turnovers Thursday versus Chico State, the Otters posted a positive assist-turnover ration for the seventh time in 10 games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Blake Jones, 14; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones, 8; ASSISTS: Ariya Briscoe/Jaden Tengan, 3; BLOCKS: Blake Jones 2; STEALS: Konner Baroni/Chol Deng/Javon Johnson/Jaden Tengan 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close their 4-game homestand by hosting Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday (Jan. 4). Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the second game of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
