Late Penalty Kick Goal Rallies Otters to Draw with No. 3 Cal State LA

The point clinches CCAA Tournament berth for CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif.Hugo Vargas-Rios converted a late penalty kick to help propel the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against No. 3 Cal State LA Sunday afternoon at Cardinale Stadium.

The tie clinches another CCAA Tournament berth for the Otters and moves their record to 7-3-6 overall and 4-2-5 in conference play.

"The coaching staff was really pleased with how hard the guys worked and played today," head coach Graeme Jaap said. "We started the game really well and controlled the tempo, but we were disappointed not to create more chances and to concede against the run of play. However, we were really happy with how the guys reacted, resulting in an equalizer from our pressure and work rate. We are excited to clinch a conference tourney spot and looking forward to our last conference game on Thursday at home."

On Senior Day, Vargas-Rios beat CSULA keeper Ricardo Cabrera with a confident finish to the right side of the goal for the equalizer. The tally was the sixth on the season for the captain.

The Otters were aggressive in the final third in the second half, firing off nine of their game-high 12 shots in the period. Alexis Sanchez and Daniel Perez recorded three shots each.

Oscar Warne scored the Golden Eagle goal in the 59th minute when he finished from atop the 18 near post.

CSUMB senior goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff was credited with two saves.

The Otters will close out the regular season on Thursday, Nov. 7, against San Francisco State. The two teams will kickoff at 2 p.m. at Cardinale Stadium.
