Tengan’s Big Night Lifts Otters Over Penguins

Jaden Tengan scores career-high 32 in 78-68 Otter victory

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Sophomore guard Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) gave Otter fans 32 reasons to be thankful Wednesday evening when his career-high 32 points lifted Cal State Monterey Bay to a 78–68 win over Dominican University in the Conlon Center.

Tengan added five rebounds and a career-high five assists to complete his virtuoso performance and help the Otters even their record at 2–2. Dominican fell to 4–3.

Sophomore Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./Thunderridge HS) chipped in nine points, Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) pulled down eight rebounds and Konner Baroni (Yuba College/Placer HS) added three blocks in support of Tengan's efforts.

Tengan scored 17 points in a 35–14 run that saw the Otters turn an early 21–10 deficit into a 45–32 lead late in the first half. The run was tempered a bit when Dominican's Thomas Oosterbrook saw his length-of-the-court prayer answered at the halftime horn to get the Penguins within single digits, 45–37, at the break.

CSUMB built its lead back to double figures multiple times in the second half, but had trouble shaking the Penguins, who waddled to within five points at 63–58 with 7:22 to play. They would get no closer, however, as the Otter made shots when they needed them down the stretch to keep Dominican at least three possessions from the lead over the final six minutes.
