Cougars Tame Otters In Home Opener

Javon Johnson leads MB with 10 points

SEASIDE, Calif. — Colorado Christian University started hot and stayed hot throughout to hand Cal State Monterey Bay 75–52 loss in the Otter home opener Sunday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Junior Javon Johnson (Antioch/De La Salle HS) scored all 10 of his team-leading points in the first half. Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) and Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) each pulled down five board. Konner Baroni (Auburn/UCSB) blocked three shots.

Both teams started out on fire, with the Otters taking their final lead at 22–19 midway through the first half. That's when things went south for CSUMB. The Cougars scored 15 unanswered points as part of a 24–4 run that turned CSUMB's 3-point advantage into a 17-point deficit at 43–26. CCU went 10-for-12 from the floor, including 4-for-4 from long range, while the Otters shot 1-for-11 over that span.

CCU opened a 20-point lead before a quick 10–0 burst got the Otters to within 10 midway through the second half. CSUMB had a pair of chances to get within single digits, but pulled no closer.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Sunday versus Colorado Christian, a Bobby McWard free throw with 4:17 remaining gave the Cougars a statistically insurmountable 66–47 lead.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS: The Otters now are 13–13 all–time when playing their first Kelp Bed game of the season. They are 10–9 in home openers since joining the NCAA for the 2004–05 season.

GOING LOW: the 52 points scored by the Otters were their fewest since scoring 48 points against Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 31, 2019.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: Led by Konner Baroni's three rejections, the Otters blocked five shots for the second consecutive game. It's the first time the Otters have blocked five or more shots in back-to-back contests since blocking six against both Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona Jan. 26–27, 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Javon Johnson 10; REBOUNDS: Joey Bilello/Blake Jones 5; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 3; BLOCKS: Konner Baroni 3; STEALS: Konner Baroni/Jaden Tengan 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take 10 days off before returning to action Wednesday, Nov. 27 at Dominican University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
