LOS ANGELES –
Nylah Mirshafiei made four penalty kick stops and
Danielle Castro converted the eventual game-winner as the No. 6 seeded Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team took down No. 3 seed Cal State LA, 0-0 (6-5 PK), on the road in the CCAA Tournament First Round at University Stadium.
After battling in a defensive affair for 110 minutes, the two teams attempted a combined 18 penalty kicks before Castro handed CSUMB the PK lead and Mirshafiei secured the victory on a save from a Madison Juarez attempt to the lower left of the frame.
The Otters regained the penalty kick advantage as Mirshafiei made two straight stops then newcomer
Chloe Van Winkle buried her attempt before Castro scored.
The penalty kick contest was the first in the CCAA Tournament since both first round games went to decisive PKs in 2021.
Mirshafiei was credited with five saves during regulation and the two overtime periods.
Jaedyn Sanders fired off a game-high four shots as CSUMB was out-shot 15-10 in the match.
The Otters now head to Arcata to participate in their first-ever CCAA Tournament Semifinals as they will take on No. 2-seed Cal State East Bay on Friday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m.
