Otters Earn Impressive Point At No. 7 Pomona

Goals by Rendon, Sandoval give MB a 2-2 draw at Cal Poly

POMONA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay was 105 seconds from pulling off a signature win, but still came away with an impressive 2–2 draw at No. 3 Cal Poly Pomona Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium.

Senior Tiger Rendon (Fresno/Central HS) scored her second goal of the season midway through the first half to stake the Otters (3–0–4, 0–0–2 CCAA) to a 1–0 lead. Pomona (8–0–1, 1–0–1) equalized midway through the second half when Tara Oper's CCAA-leading fourth assist of 2024 led to an Alexis Macias goal.

Just when it appeared as if the teams were going to settle for a 1–1 draw, Long Beach City College transfer Evelyn Sandoval finished a nice series of passes from Danielle Castro (Livermore/Las Positas College) and redshirt freshman Jordan Sawyer (Tracy/Kimball HS) to put the Otters back on top in the 82nd minute.

The soccer gods can be fickle, however, and with time winding down, they smiled on the Broncos. With fewer than two minutes remaining, a long Bronco pass found its way to the center of the goalmouth. The Otter defense was there, but the clearing attempt went awry, striking the far post and carroming in to force the teams to share Sunday's spoils.

Rendon moved to No. 25 on the Otter career scoring list with her goal. Sandoval, Sawyer and Castro each registered her first collegiate point. Nylah Mirshafiei (Fountain Valley HS) made six saves for the second consecutive match.

CSUMB returns home to to host Stanislaus State Friday (Oct. 11) in Cardinale Stadium. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
