Chico Set Pieces Sink Otter Men, 3-0

No. 12 Wildcats score on three second half set pieces

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 12 ranked Chico State gave an impressive second half performance, converting three set pieces after the interval into a 3–0 win over Cal State Monterey bay Sunday afternoon at Cardinale Stadium.

CSUMB (4–2–3, 1–2–1 CCAA) arguably had the better of play for the first half hour, but Chico (8–1–2, 2–0–2 CCAA) began to exert itself as the first half wound to a close. The teams finished the opening period level in both shots (4) and shots on goal (2).

After the restart, however, Chico came out the more aggressive side and began to tilt the field towards the Otter goal. Carson Zarate broke the deadlock in the 55th minute by heading home a Bryan Manriquez corner. Twelve minutes later Sylus Sells and Josh Moll scored a carbon copy goal to double the Wildcat lead.

With the Otters picking up the intensity to try to get back into the match, Chico was gifted a free kick after a Wildcat foul and a pair yellow cards issued to Moll and Otter defender Alexis Sanchez. This time, Preston Moll took the kick from the left wing and snuck his shot inside the near post to close the scoreline.

Eric Vazquez-Acosta and Hugo Vargas-Rios led the Otter offense with two shots apiece. Freshman Sean Mattivi made four saves.

CSUMB returns to action Thursday with a trip south to take on Cal State San Marcos. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. as the second match of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
