Otters Back In The Win Column With Shutout

Sean Mattivi posts first clean sheet in 4-0 win over Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bounced back into the win column, scoring a season-high four goals to support Sean Mattivi's (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS) first collegiate shutout in a 4–0 win over Stanislaus State Friday night at Cardinale Stadium.

All the offense might have been for naught without the strong effort of Mattivi in goal. His seven saves were a personal and team season-high while his clean sheet was the first by an Otter since a 2–0 win over Colorado Mesa on Sept. 14.

Juniors Ronaldo Guardarrama (San Marcos/Madison HS) and Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) led the offense with each scoring is team-leading third goal of the 2024. Jomar Munaf (Norwalk/Gahr HS) and Kane Ritchie (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) each added his first of the season.

Ritchie opened his senior season scoring ledger with a powerful finish of a Francisco Ponce (Soquel HS) cross less than four minutes after kickoff. Ward doubled the Otter advantage on the half hour.

Despite trailing 2–0, Stanislaus pressed the attack until well into the second half. The Otter finally could exhale in the 72nd minute when a darting run by Belandres set up Guardarrama for a tap-in and a 3–0 lead.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Ronaldo Guardarrama tapped in from the doorstep to extend the Otter lead to 3–0 in the 72nd minute..

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, GOAL EDITION… Cameron Belandres and Jomar Munaf each scored their first Otter goals in Friday's 4–0 win over Stanislaus State. They became with fifth and sixth different players to score their first Otter goals so far this season.

A STANISLAUS 3–PEAT… Friday's 4–0 win over Stanislaus State was CSUMB's third consecutive win over the Warriors. It's the first time since 2009 that the Otters have defeated Stanislaus in three consecutive games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Kane Ritchie (1) 4', Mason Ward (3) 30', Ronaldo Guardarrama (3), 72', Jomar Munaf (1) 87', ; ASSISTS: Cameron Belandres 2 (1,2), Francisco Ponce (2), Hugo Vargas-Rios 2 (2,3); SHOTS: Kane Ritchie 3; SAVES: Sean Mattivi 7.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a great response from the guy after a tough weekend in L.A. We started the game much better and it was great to get an early goal. We kept pushing and created some more good chances in the first half and were really happy to go into the half with the two goal lead. Although we didn't play as well in the second half, we still looked very dangerous on the break and scored another two good goals. Great to see some good impact from the bench. Now we can look forward to another tough game on Sunday against a national-ranked Chico state side." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters welcome No. 12 ranked Chico State for a key CCAA showdown Sunday at Cardinale Stadium. The match will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
