Six Pack Of Goals Leads Otters Past Sunbirds

Otters miss school record by one in a 6-1 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — A brace from senior Kane Ritchie (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) sent Cal State Monterey Bay on its way to a near record–setting performance in a 6–1 win over visiting Fresno Pacific University Tuesday afternoon in Cardinale Stadium.

Ritchie scored his first two goals as an Otter, leading the CSUMB to its second-most prolific output ever against an NCAA opponent. Sophomore Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) added his second goal of the season off an assist from Hartnell College transfer Alan Bedolla.

Janos Kömmerling (penalty kick), Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) and Bedolla joined the goal-scoring parade.

Ritchie opened the Otter ledger from the middle of the penalty area in the eighth minute. less than a minute later, FPU took advantage of a scramble in the box to equalize.

But tie didn't last long as an FPU defender pulled Ritchie down on a breakaway in the box in the 12th minute. Kömmerling finished from the spot to restore the Otter lead.

It was all CSUMB from there, with the Otters scoring four times in the second half to cruise to the win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Kane Ritchie and Miguel Guerrero assisted on each others goals early in the second half to extend the Otter lead to 4–1.

A REFRESHING A SIX PACK… CSUMB's six goals in Tuesday's win over Fresno Pacific were the second-most ever scored by the Otters against an NCAA opponent. The Otters scored seven in a win at Stanislaus State on Nov. 7, 2019.

KEEPERS LOOKING FOR WORK… The Otters are 1–0–1 on the young season but their goalkeepers haven't been pressed into much action. CSUMB has yet to record a save through the first two games.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Kane Ritchie and Alan Bedolla each recorded their first Otter goals in Tuesday's win over Fresno Pacific. Ritchie scored five goals as a sophomore at College of Charleston in 2019 while Bedolla scored 19 at Hartnell last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Kane Ritchie 2 (1,2) Janos Kömmerling (1), Miguel Guerrero (1), Mason Ward (2), Alan Bedolla (1); ASSISTS: Janos Kömmerling (1), Miguel Guerrero (1), Javier Romero (1), Kane Richie (2), Alan Bedolla (1). SHOTS LEADER: Hugo Vargas-Rios 5; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "We are really pleased for the boys. We are asking players to take responsibility to win us games because we know they have the ability to do it and they did that today." – CSUMB Assistant Coach Andrew Livingston

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their next two contests, beginning with a nonconference showdown at defending Pac West Conference co-champion Dominican University Friday (Sept. 8). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kennelly Field.
