Otters Upset At Domincan

Early goal proves costly in 2-1 defeat

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A defensive miscue led to an early deficit that Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't overcome in a 2–1 loss at defending PacWest Conference champion Dominican University Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Diego Grande took advantage of a misplayed Otter pass in the fourth minute to give Dominican an early 1–0 lead. The Penguins doubled their advantage when Joe Blakely ran onto a long pass and beat Otter goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) from the top of the box seven minutes after halftime.

The Otters pulled one back when Hugo Vargas-Rios (Pajaro Valley HS/Cabrillo College) was the recipient of a poorly played Penguin pass and finished from close range in the 72nd minute. That was as close as the Otters would get.

For the game, CSUMB out-shot Dominican 18–11 and held a 9–5 advantage in corner kicks. Blickenstaff made his first three collegiate saves in the match.
