Otters Strike For Seven To Beat Academy of Art

CSUMB ties mark for Division II goals in 7-0 win

SAN FRANCISCO — For the second time in three matches, the Cal State Monterey Bay strikeforce was unstoppable, this time putting seven behind Academy of Art in a 7–0 win Monday afternoon at Paul Goode Field.

The seven goals tie the Otter record for the most ever scored against an NCAA Division II opponent. The Otters scored six in a 6–1 win over Fresno Pacific last week.

Goals two minutes apart from San Francisco natives Javier Romero (Marshall HS) and Jose Madrigal (Arts & Tech HS) staked the Otters to a 2–0 lead before the match was 16 minutes old. Romero closed the scoring by completing his first collegiate brace just after the hour mark.

Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) scored his team-leading third of the season to extend the Otter lead to 3–0 in the 21st minute. Local products Alan Bedolla (Hartnell College) and Roberto Banegas (Marina HS) made it 5–0 by halftime.

Janos Kömmerling converted a penalty kick six minutes before Romero capped the scoring to account for the final Otter goal.

Junior Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) made his first start of the season and earned his first shutout of 2023. He made two saves.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Roberto Banegas closed the first half scoreline after running onto a through ball from Miguel Guerrero in the 37th minute to make it 5–0 Otters.

BLACKJACK… CSUMB totaled 21 points on seven goals and seven assists in Monday's 7–0 win at Academy of Art. That is the most points ever recorded against an NCAA Division II opponent. The previous record was 18 at Stanislaus State on Nov. 7, 2019. The all–time record of 24 points came in a win over UC Santa Cruz in 2019.

SEVEN UP… CSUMB's seven goals in Monday's 7–0 win at Academy of Art match the school record for goals in match against an NCAA Division II opponent. The Otters also scored seven in a win at Stanislaus State on Nov. 7, 2019. The all–time Otter record for goals is 14 in a win over Bethany College in 2003, CSUMB's final season at the NAIA level.

BANEGAS INTO THE TOP 25… With a goal and an assist in Monday's 7–0 win at Academy of Art, Roberto Banegas jumped up to No. 22 on the Otter career points list with 18.

KÖMMERLING FROM THE SPOT… Janos Kömmerling became just the second player in Otter history to record two penalty kick goals in a single season when he converted from the spot in the second half of Tuesday's 7–0 win at Academy of Art. He also made a PK in last week's 6–1 win over Fresno Pacific. Nate Torricelli made five spot kicks in 2009 to set the Otter record.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Javier Romero 2 (2), Jose Madrigal (1), Mason Ward (3), Alan Bedolla (2), Roberto Banegas (1), Janos Kömmerling (2); ASSISTS: Nico Virga (1), Kane Ritchie (3), Roberto Banegas (1), Janos Kömmerling (2), Miguel Guerrero (2), Jose Madrigal (1), Alexis Sanchez (2); SHOTS: Javier Romero/Mason Ward 3; SAVES: Matthias Milton 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Seaside to open a 3–match homestand starting Friday (Sept. 15) against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Metro State of Denver.
