Otters Draw With No. 21 Mines In Opener

Mason Ward’s brilliant run lifts CSUMB to a 1–1 tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — After gifting an early goal to No. 21 Colorado School of Mines, Cal State Monterey Bay played 75 minutes of inspired soccer to earn a 1–1 draw with the Orediggers in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Cardinale Stadium.

A turnover in the CSUMB box following a short goal kick led to an easy goal and a 1–0 Mines lead 14 minutes after the opening whistle. It proved to be the only shot the Orediggers would put on frame as the Otters carried play for the balance of the match.

Mines was able to absorb the CSUMB pressure until the 70th minute, when sophomore Mason Ward (Temecula Valey HS) took a long, curling outlet pass from Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS), played give-and-go with College of Charleston transfer Kane Ritchie (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep), then finished a 30-yard run with a composed 1v1 finish inside the box to tie the match.

CSUMB out-shot Mines 12–6 for the match and earned an 8–2 edge in corner kicks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jose Madrigal sent a ball wide left in the 86th minute. It was the final attempt for either team.

FOR OPENERS… Friday's draw with Colorado School of Mines leaves the Otters with a 9–12–5 record all–time in season openers. They are now 7–7–5 on opening day at the NCAA Division II level.

JAAP IS UNBEATING ON OPENING DAY… With Friday's 1–1 draw against Colorado School of Mines, CSUMB is unbeaten (2–0–2) in four opening days with Graeme Jaap has head coach.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Four players made their Otter debuts in Friday's draw versus Colorado School of Mines. Luis Escalante and Kane Ritchie also earned their first starts. Redshirt Julian Lomeli and former Hartnell College star Alan Bedolla came on as rserves.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Mason Ward (1); ASSISTS: Kane Ritchie (1); SHOTS: Roberto Banegas/Mason Ward 3; SAVES: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 2–match homestand to open the season by hosting Pac West Conference rival Fresno Pacific Tuesday (Sept. 5). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
