Dramatic PK Earns Point In CCAA Opener

Jazmine Casteneda converts with 80 seconds left at Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team earned a dramatic point in its California Collegiate Athletic Conference opener thanks to a Jazmine Casteneda (Aptos HS) penalty kick with 80 seconds remaining in regulation that gave the Otters a 1–1 tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday evening at Toro Stadium.

Casteneda earned her PK after stealing a poorly taken clearance just outside the box. She put the ball into the box where Toro defender Emma Arkus was called for a handball after trying to play it back to her keeper.

Casteneda stepped to the spot and calmly slotted her effort past Toro keeper Abigail Escalante, who guessed wrong.

Dominguez Hills had taken the lead 15 minutes early thanks to a PK of its own when freshman Kamryn Bubak was adjudge to have tripped Fatima Arnold at the far left boundary of the penalty area. Otter keeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) guessed correctly but couldn't get to Arnold's perfectly placed shot tucked inside the right post.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jazmine Casteneda's spot kick found its way home with 80 seconds remaining in regulation.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS… Friday's match at Cal State Dominguez Hills was the 19th CCAA opener in Otter women's soccer history. The Otters are now 5–11–3 in CCAA openers dating back to their first in 2004. When opening on the road they are 1–7–3.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… The Otters have scored six goals so far in 2023 and six different players have been responsible.

FIT TO BE TIED… Friday's 1–1 draw at Cal State Dominguez Hills was the fourth tie already in 2023. The Otter record for ties in one season is five, set in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otter defense continues to be a stingy lot, allowing just five goals in the first seven matches of 2023. The Otters have not allowed more than one goal in 12 consecutive matches dating back to October of last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Jazmine Casteneda (1); ASSISTS: None; SHOTS: Jennifer Limon 3; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 2–match SoCal swing at Cal State L.A. Sunday (Oct. 1). Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the second match of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
