Otters Open CCAA Play In Style, Win 2–0

Goals by Bedolla, Romero help Otters slay defending champion Toros

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team opened its California Collegiate Athletic Association slate in impressive fashion Friday night, handing defending champion Cal State Dominguez Hills a 2–0 defeat at Toro Stadium.

With the victory, CSUMB (5–1–2/1–0–0 CCAA) is off to the second best start in program history. Only the 2019 squad, which opened 6–1–2, started the season hotter.

Both CSUMB goals were art. The Otters opened the scoring late in the first half when junior Alan Bedolla (Pajaro Valley HS/Hartnell College) perfectly timed a run to head home a pinpoint pass from freshman Julian Lomeli (Merced/Elk Grove Charter). CSUMB doubled its lead early in the second half when Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) hit a wicked half-volley from a failed clearance inside the right post.

Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) and Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) split time between the pipes to earn CSUMB's second consecutive clean sheet. Milton made three saves and Blickenstaff made two.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alexis Sanchez got just enough of a Jhoel Sarraude attempt in the goalmouth to send it wide in the 84th minute. It was the last scoring threat for the Toros.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS… CSUMB improved to 6–11–2 all–time in CCAA openers with Friday's 2–0 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT… The Otters have enjoyed the finest run of play since Graeme Jaap joined the Otter bench in 2017 with 36 victories in five–plus seasons. Even with that, Friday's 2–0 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills was the first CCAA–opening victory for the Otters since a 2–1 win at Cal State East Bay in 2015.

TAMING THE TOROS… Cal State Dominguez Hills dominated the early part of the series, winning 14 of the first 15 meetings. With Friday's win, however, CSUMB now holds a 4–1–2 mark in the series since then, including a 3–0–1 record in Carson.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters were out-shot 14–13 in Friday's 2–0 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills, marking the first time since 2022 that has happened. Nevertheless, CSUMB is out-shooting its opponents by a remarkable 132–48 margin through eight games. CSUMB has out-shot 15 of its last 17 opponents dating back to last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Alan Bedolla (3), Javier Romero (3); ASSISTS: Julian Lomeli (1); SHOTS: Alexis Sanchez/George Aquino/Javier Romero/Kane Ritchie 2; SAVES: Matthias Milton 3, Jack Blickenstaff 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 2–match SoCal swing at Cal State L.A. Sunday (Oct. 1). Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. as the opening match of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
