Otters Blank No. 6 Cal State L.A., 2–0

CSUMB earns highest-ranked win in program history

LOS ANGELES — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team picked up a statement victory Sunday afternoon by blanking No. 6 Cal State L.A. 2–0 at CSULA's University Stadium.

With the victory, CSUMB (6–1–2 overall, 2–0–0 CCAA) surpassed the 2019 squad for the best start in program history. Doing it on the road against one of the nation's premier soccer programs makes the accomplishment all the more impressive.

The match was as evenly split statistically as you would expect from two talented, in-form teams. The Otters drew first blood just past the half hour, thanks to a quick build up and beautiful tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) to Julian Lomeli (Merced/Elk Grove Charter) to Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC), who finished for his second goal of 2023.

Lomeli doubled the Otter advantage two minutes before the interval when he banged a Banegas deflection into the upper left vee for his first collegiate marker.

The teams played to a standstill in the second half, although not due to a lack of attacking. They combined for 17 shots in the period (9–8 in favor of the Otters), putting 10 on frame (6–4 for L.A.)

Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) was up to the task for the Otters in goal. He made a career–high seven saves to earn his first collegiate shutout.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Cal State L.A.'s Aidan Wait missed the target in the 89th minute with what proved to be the final shot for either team.

GIANT KILLERS, PART I… Sunday's 2–0 win at No. 6 Cal State L.A. was the highest ranked win in Otter men's soccer history. The Otters defeated No. 7 Sonoma State 2–0 on Oct. 16, 2009.

GIANT KILLERS, PART II… With Sunday's 2–0 win at No. 6 Cal State L.A., CSUMB is now 2–2–2 in its last six matches against nationally–ranked opponents.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, GOAL EDITION… With Sunday's strike at Cal State L.A., Julian Lomeli became the third Otter player to score his first collegiate goal in 2023. He joins Janos Kömmerling and Alan Bedolla in that club.

KEEP IT CLEAN… The Otter defense has pitched three consecutive shutouts. CSUMB has not allowed a goal over the last 321 minutes dating back to Sept. 17.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Roberto Banegas (2), Julian Lomeli (1); ASSISTS: Roberto Banegas (2), Miguel Guerrero (3), Julian Lomeli (2); SHOTS: Nathan Padilla 3; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 7.

THE LAST WORD… "What a weekend. Before we made trip we chatted about how was this was the first time that we believed we could go to Southern California and get six points and the guys delivered. We scored two great goals and Jack made some good saves. We defended really well and still looked really dangerous in the second half on the counter. Two clean sheets on the weekend and four great goals. Was really impressed with how the guys handled adversity and it shows the great character we have in the group. Really proud to be an otter" – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Cardinale Stadium for a pair of matches next weekend, starting with a visit from Sonoma State Friday (Oct. 6). Kickoff will be at 4:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
