Otter Close Nonconference Slate With Third Draw

Amelia McManus scores her first of 2023 in 1-1 tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team played to its third draw of the young season with a 1–1 tie against San Francisco State Saturday evening in Cardinale Stadium.

Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) opened her 2023 scoring account with an 11th minute goal to stake the Otters to an early 1–0 lead. But the Gators drew even shortly before halftime when Carissa Capinpin scored her second goal of the season.

Despite trailing for most of the first half, the Gators actually carried the attack for much of the period, holding a 4–2 edge in shots. CSUMB turned that around in the second half, out-shooting SFSU 6–1 over the final 45 minutes, but the Otters could not find the match-winner.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Amelia McManus sent an attempt over the bar in the 85th minute. It was the final shot attempt for either team.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otter defense continues to be a stingy lot, allowing just four goals in the first six matches of 2023. The Otters have not allowed more than one goal in 11 consecutive matches dating back to October of last season. CSUMB owns a 0.72 goals against average over that stretch.

FIT TO BE TIED… The Otters have played to 22 ties in five–plus seasons under Head Coach Laura VanWart, who owns the best winning percentage in Otter women's soccer history. CSUMB is 8–6–7 in games immediately following a draw over that span.

OF COURSE THE SEAL WAS BROKEN… History said the Otters would score following Monday's scoreless draw with Westmont College. CSUMB has played consecutive scoreless draws just twice in its history: vs. Menlo and Academy of Art in 2021 and vs. Bridgeport and Dominican in 2017.

McMANUS ALONE IN FOURTH ON GOALS LIST… Amelia McManus moved into sole possession of the No. 4 spot on the Otter career goals list by scoring her 13th in Saturday's 1–1 draw with San Francisco State. She needs one more to tie Regan Porteous (2012–15) for the No. 3 spot.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Amelia McManus (1); ASSISTS: Alexandra Diaz (1), Tiger Rendon (2); SHOTS LEADER: Amelia McManus 4; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin California Collegiate Athletic Association action next week when the travel to Southern California to take on defending Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday (Sept. 29) and Cal State L.A. Sunday (Oct. 1).
