Otters Tame Gators In Preconference Finale

Brilliant goals from Guerrero, Kömmerling lift MB to 2-0 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team completed the nonconference portion of its schedule in style with a convincing 2–0 victory over San Francisco State Saturday night in Cardinale Stadium.

CSUMB (4–1–2 overall) benefited from a pair of incredible goals. Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) volleyed home his team–leading fourth goal of the season to give the Otters a 1–0 lead just six minutes after the opening whistle. Janos Kömmerling (Dusseldorf, Germany) closed the scoreline with a magnificent free kick from 23 yards out in the 75th minute.

The Otters pressed the attack as usual, compiling a 17–3 edge in shots and a 9–0 advantage in corner kicks. The Gators picked up the intensity in the second half and created several chances, but goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) kept his defense composed in the box and was not credited with a save.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Janos Kömmerling bent a free kick just inside the near post to double the Otter lead with 15 minutes remaining.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE… Whether they're on the Cardinale Stadium turf or on the Otter Sports Complex grass, the Otters continue to be dominant at home against nonconference competition. CSUMB is 10–1–4 in its last 15 nonconference matches at home dating back to the 2018 campaign.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… After out-shooting San Francisco State 17–3 Saturday night, the Otters are out-shooting their opponents by a remarkable 119–34 margin through seven games. CSUMB has out-shot all seven opponents this season and has out-shot 15 of its last 16 opponents dating back to last season.

MIGGY IN THE TOP 20… With his goal in Saturday night's win over San Francisco State, Miguel Guerrero moved into the Otter Top 20 for career points with 20. He tied Ben Devoll (2004–07) for 19th place.

MIGGY IN THE TOP 15… With his goal in Saturday night's win over San Francisco State, Miguel Guerrero moved to No. 15 on the Otter career goals list with eight.

MILTON KEEPS IT CLEAN… Saturday's 2–0 shutout of San Francisco State was the 10th career clean sheet for Matthias Milton, a mark that ranks No. 3 in Otter history. His next shutout will tie Brenden Baca (2007–09) for the No. 2 spot. Evan Drake set the Otter record with 13 shutouts from 2011–15.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Miguel Guerrero (4), Janos Kömmerling (3); ASSISTS: Mason Ward (2). SHOTS LEADER: Jose Madrigal/Javier Romero 3; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "I thought it was an excellent team performance tonight. We got at them from the first minute and caused them a lot of problems. We had some really good attacking moments with two great goals from Miggy and Janos. I still think we have another level to get to and I am very hopeful we will. The guys are really excited about a tough trip to LA next week for two road games." — CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin California Collegiate Athletic Association action next week when the travel to Southern California to take on defending CCAA Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday (Sept. 29) and No. 2 ranked nationally Cal State L.A. Sunday (Oct. 1).
