Otters, Warriors Play To Entertaining Draw

Teams total 19 shots but neither side can break through in 0-0 tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer welcomed NCAA newcomer Westmont College to Seaside for the first time to play a rare Monday matinee at the Otter Sports Complex. The the teams played to a scoreless draw in what still proved to be an entertaining affair.

The totals for both shots (10–9 advantage for Westmont) and shots on goal (4–3 advantage for Monterey) were nearly identical, although the methods by which those shots came about proved to be a contrast in styles.

Westmont's game plan appeared to center around asking Otter goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) as many questions as possible. The Warriors continually tested her with dangerous strikes from outside the box, although the Otter sophomore had all of the answers.

CSUMB, meanwhile, tried to unlock the Warrior defense from inside the box, although they never found a way to solve junior Maya Pablos, who made all four stops asked of her.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Aubrey McKessy went up to the crossbar to snare a well-struck shot from Shayna Stick in the 88th minute. It proved to be the final shot for either team.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otter defense continues to be a stingy lot, allowing just three goals in the first five matches of 2023. The Otters have not allowed more than one goal in 10 consecutive matches dating back to October of last season. CSUMB owns a 0.50 goals against average over that stretch.

FIT TO BE TIED… The Otters have played to 21 ties in five–plus seasons under Head Coach Laura VanWart, who owns the best winning percentage in Otter women's soccer history. CSUMB is 8–6–6 in games immediately following a draw over that span.

EXPECT THE SEAL TO BE BROKEN… You can expect offense Saturday when the Otters host San Francisco State. CSUMB has played consecutive scoreless draws just twice in its history: vs. Menlo and Academy of Art in 2021 and vs. Bridgeport and Dominican in 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; SHOTS LEADERS: Tiger Rendon/Hennessy Silva/Madison Wilson 2; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–match homestand by hosting San Francisco State and a rare nonconference meeting. Kickoff at Cardinale Stadium will be at 4:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
