Otters Subdue Tough Westminster Side, 2–1

Guerrero, Madrigal score; Milton adds big save late

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team earned a hard-fought victory over a tenacious Westminster University side with a 2–1 decision Sunday afternoon in Cardinale Stadium.

Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) netted his third goal of the season with a venomous strike on the half hour. Following a Westminster spot kick from Lute Maja late in the first half, Jose Madrigal (San Francisco/Arts & Tech HS) provided the match-winner by tapping home a sweet give-and-go from Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) and Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) in the 57th minute.

The match began with Westminster applying pressure throughout the first half only to see the Otter defense close the door whenever the Griffins approached goal. CSUMB spent much of the period replying with dangerous counters, one of which led directly to Guerrero's goal when Ronaldo Guardarrama's (San Marcos/Madison HS) cross was cleared right to Guerrero's feet 22 yards from goal.

The second half saw the Otters begin to carry the attack in their accustomed manner, though the Griffins still finished with a 52 to 48 percentage possession advantage.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Matthias Milton charged hard off his line to deny a golden opportunity on a well struck shot by Westminster's Luis Martinez in the 84th minute. It proved to be Westminster's final shot of the match.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE… Whether they're on the Cardinale Stadium turf or on the Otter Sports Complex grass, the Otters continue to be dominant at home against nonconference competition. CSUMB is 9–1–4 in its last 14 nonconference matches at home dating back to the 2018 campaign.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… After out-shooting Westminster University 12–3 Sunday afternoon, the Otters are out-shooting their opponents by a remarkable 102–31 margin through six games. CSUMB has out-shot all six opponents this season and has out-shot 14 of its last 15 opponents dating back to last season.

GUERRERO TAKES HIS SHOTS… Miguel Guerrero attempted a match–high five shots in Sunday's win over Westminster University, giving him 78 for his career. That ties him with Luis Lopez (2017–19) for No. 10 on the Otter career list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Miguel Guerrero (3), Jose Madrigal (2); ASSISTS: Mason Ward (1), Javier Romero (2)). SHOTS LEADER: Miguel Guerrero 5; SAVES: Matthias Milton 2.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really happy with the guys' reaction today after a disappointing tie on Friday. We worked very hard for each other and played some really good soccer. I'm excited about going into conference with a great group of guys." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play a rare nonconference match against San Francisco State when the Gators visit Cardinale Stadium Saturday (Sept. 23). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action
