Otters Drop Tough Opener at Azusa Pacific

Cougars ride first-half goal to 1-0 victory

AZUSA, Calif. — Short-handed Cal State Monterey Bay played tough, but couldn't find the equalizer to an early Azusa Pacific goal as the Cougars hung on for a 1–0 win Thursday night night in the season opener for both teams at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Alexis Salazar proved to be the only play to solve Cabrillo College transfer Jessica Zavala, who made her first collegiate start in placed of injured Aubrey McKessy. Salazar scored from well outside the penalty area in the 19th minute. It was the only one of seven shots on frame to make it past CSUMB's junior keeper.

The game was a defensive battle with both back lines forcing almost every shot to come from distance. The only player for either team to get a shot off in the box was Otter junior Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS), who tested APU keeper Maddie Williams from 12 yards in the second minute only to be denied.

CSUMB kept coming, but couldn't finish a pair of late opportunities. Tannin Klunis (Sebastopol/Analy HS) missed her first attempt of the season in the 83rd minute. It was the final shot of the match for either team.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters earned a corner with 15 seconds remaining but couldn't take advantage before time expired.

FOR OPENERS… The Otters fell to 10–11–2 all-time in season openers with Thursday's 1–0 setback at APU. The Otters are 3–2–1 in six openers under Head Coach Laura VanWart.

TAKING HER SHOTS… Amelia McManus led the Otters with two shots Thursday at Azusa Pacific, giving her 58 in 2+ seasons as an Otter. She needs eight more to move into the CSUMB career Top 10 for shots attempted.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otter defense continued to be a stingy lot, allowing just one goal in Thursday's season opener at Azusa Pacific. The Otters have not allowed more than one goal in six consecutive matches dating back to October of last season.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST, PART II… For what it's worth, the top five defensive seasons in CSUMB history have come in the five seasons with Laura VanWart at the helm. The Otters have not posted a goals against average above 1.00 in the last four consecutive seasons.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otter conclude their Southern California roadtrip with a visit to Biola University Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
