LA MIRADA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer earned its first draw of 2023 with a 1–1 tie at Pac West Conference rival Biola University Saturday evening at Al Barbour Field.
Senior Hennessy Silva (South Torrance HS) picked the pocket of an Eagle midfielder in the sixth minute and fed Tannin Klunis (Sebastopol/analy HS) at the top of the box. Klunis powered her way to a 1v1 with Biola keeper Autum Monty before sliding the ball under her for an early lead.
The Eagles rebounded with a goal early in the second half to close the scoring.
Biola earned an 8–7 advantage in shots, but managed to put just two shots on frame compared to five for the Otters.
Sophomore
Aubrey McKessy (Canyon County/Canyon HS) got her first start since redshirting the 2022 season and made one save in 45 scoreless minutes.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Biola's Chloe Laurin fired well over the bar in the 79th minute with the last shot of the game for either team.
PLAYING IT CLOSE TO THE VEST… The Otters and Eagles have met three time since moving to the NCAA level. The results have been one CSUMB win (2–1 in 2018) and a pair of draws (0–0 in 2022 and 1–1 in 2023).
THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otter defense continued to be a stingy lot, allowing just one goal in the first two matches of 2023. The Otters have not allowed more than one goal in seven consecutive matches dating back to October of last season.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB, GOAL EDITION… Appearing in her 52nd career collegiate match, Tannin Klunis joined the goal scoring club with her first tally as an Otter.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB, ASSIST EDITION… Sophomore Hennessy Silva passed her first collegiate assist on the first collegiate goal by Tannin Klunis in Saturday's 1–1 draw at Biola.
TAKING HER BEST SHOTS… Tannin Klunis scored her first career goal on just her fifth career shot. She has taken two so far in 2023 after attempting just three total shots over her first 50 collegiate appearances.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Tannin Klunis (1); ASSISTS: Hennessy Silva (1); SHOTS: Jennifer Limon 2; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 1.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to campus to open a 4–game homestand Saturday (Sept. 9) against Academy of Art. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
