Otters Bow Out In Super Regional Title Game

San Bernardino uses 7-run sixth inning to pull away for 14-8 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — One bad inning dashed Cal State Monterey Bay hopes for a trip to the College World Series as visiting Cal State San Bernardino pulled off a 14–8 victory at the West Super Regional championship game Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

With the win, San Bernardino (43–17 overall) advances to the CWS starting June 3 in Cary, N.C. CSUMB's season ends with a school record-tying 39 wins (39–18) as well as California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season and tournament titles.

The Otters gave up a couple of early runs but came back to take a 3–2 lead in the third inning thanks to a solo home run off the batt of JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College). It was Engman's second homer of the super regional and eight of the season.

But the Coyotes responded in their half of the third with a 3-run blast from their right fielder, Giovanni Del Negro, to retake the lead, 5–3.

The game went sideways for the Otters in the sixth inning, when San Bernardino started the inning with four walks and a pair of hit batters to open the floodgates on a 7-run inning. It was part of a game-long struggle with the strike zone for Otter pitching, which finished the day with 10 walks and five hit batters.

The Otter offense continued to battle, eventually scoring eight times. The big hits in the rally were an RBI triple by Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) and the first collegiate home run from Dominica Felice (Monte Vista Christian/MPC).
