Otter Bats Come Alive In Day 2 Split With Gators

Gasper throws 1-hitter, Bullis and Perez homer in Game 1 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bats came alive, Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) remained dominant and the Otters earned another doubleheader split with San Francisco State Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (23–17, 14–10 CCAA) took the opener 11–0 in five innings behind a 1–hitter from Gasper. SFSU (18–17, 6–12) scored five runs in the first and held on for a 5–4 win in the nightcap.

Gasper was virtually unhittable for the second consecutive outing, following up Friday's 2–hit shutout with a 1–hitter Saturday. The lone hit she allowed was an infield single with two out in the fifth inning.

The Otter offense gave her all the support she would need in the first when Oli Perez's (Ceres HS) RBI single opened a 4–run outburst and Alyssa Burt's (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) run–scoring double closed it. CSUMB put the game away with a 6–run third inning that included home runs from Lauren Bullis (La Verne/Bishop Amat HS) and Perez.

After being held to five hits total in the first three games, SFSU exploded for five hits and five runs in the first inning of Game 2. Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) settled down from there, shutting out the Gators on three hits over the final 6 1/3 innings.

But the Otter offense couldn't find its traction in time. They broke Gator starter Kaitlyn Maddux's run of 17 1/3 scoreless innings in the fifth when Haylee Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) hit a bases-clearing double to pull CSUMB to within 5–3. An RBI single from Bullis in the sixth made it a 1–run game, but that's where the rally ended.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Oli Perez's solo homer capped a 6–run Otter third that put CSUMB on top 10–0.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Oli Perez grounded out to second for the final out.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? Cassie Gasper lowered her season ERA to a microscopic 1.08 with Saturday's shutout of San Francisco State. The Otter record for lowest ERA in a season is 1.64 by Michelle Tating in 2009.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Lauren Bullis's 2–run homer in Game 1 Saturday against San Francisco State was the first collegiate home run for the sophomore first baseman.

PEREZ DIGS THE LONG BALL… Oli Perez hit her team–leading fifth home run of the season in Saturday's Game 1 victory over San Francisco State. It was the 11th of her career, moving her into sole possession of 14th place on the Otter list. Ally Alcayaga is No. 13 with 12.

DOUBLE THE FUN TIMES THREE… Alyssa Burt hit three doubles in Saturday's doubleheader against San Francisco State, giving her 50 for her career and moving her past Madi Casto (2014–17) for No. 5 on the Otter career doubles list. She needs two more to pass Bianca Noriega (2013–16) for No. 4. Anneliese Lopez (2014–17) owns the CSUMB career record with 60.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Alyssa Burt 2 (10), Abby Alcayaga (10). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (5), Lauren Bullis (1).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Haylee Clay (2), Alyssa Burt (11). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head south for a crucial 4–game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills Apr. 14–15 in Carson.
