Otters Split Pitching Duels With Toros

CSUMB scores late to take nightcap, 3-2; falls 2-1 in opener

CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay split a pair of pitching duels in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Otters dropped the opener 2–1 before taking the nightcap, 3–2 on Toro Diamond.

The split keeps CSUMB (24–18, 15–11 CCAA) just ahead of Dominguez Hills (22–14, 11–10) for fourth place in the CCAA race.

Second baseman Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) reached third on a 3–base error to lead off the seventh inning of the nightcap then just beat the throw home with a brilliant slide on a sacrifice fly from Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) to break a 2–2 tie in the seventh inning.

Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) threw a perfect inning to close the game with her second save of the season.

Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) struck out five in six inning to earn her ninth win.

Gasper was the victim of one tough inning in Game 1, picking up the loss despite allowing just five hits and striking out five. Three of those hits came in the third inning, however, when the Toros pushed across their only runs.

The Otters pulled one of those runs back on an Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) RBI knock in the fifth inning. They had two chances to drive home the potential tying and go-ahead runs later in the frame, but couldn't find the key hit.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Relief pitcher Sara Bhatt got the final two outs in the fifth inning with the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. They proved to be CSUMB's final base runners.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ashley Honorio scored on an Ivana Perez sac fly to break a 2–2 tie in the seventh. Cassie Gasper easily retired the side in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

BURT'S DOUBLE VISION CONTINUES… Alyssa Burt's double in Game 1 was the 51st of her career, tying her with Bianca Noriega (2013–16) for No. 4 on the single–season list. She needs four more to pass Cori Reinhardt (2012–15) for the No. 3 spot.

GASPER, STETLER STILL ON TOP… With six and five strikeouts respectively Friday, Cassie Gasper and Kassidy Stetler continue to top the CCAA strikeout chart. Gasper now has 124 strikeouts while Stetler has 106. They are looking to become the first teammates to lead the league since Stephanie Jimenez and Lauren Harper did it for Cal state Dominguez Hills in 2012.

TOP 10 Ks… With 11 total strikeouts Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the 2023 Otter pitching staff moved from No. 11 to No. 8 on the single–season strikeout list with 234. Next up is the 2012 CCAA Championship team, which fanned a combined 245 batters.

GASPER SAVES THE DAY… Cassie Gasper earned her fifth career save in Friday's 3–2 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills. That ties her with Hayley Fein (2017–20) for No. 2 on the Otter all–time list.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Alyssa Burt (12). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Kieley Ganaden (4), Oli Perez (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series at Dominguez Hills with a doubleheader starting Saturday at 11 a.m.
