Late Power Surge Leads To Key Split With Toros

Ally Alcayaga homer, Oli Perez double and triple pace Game 2 victory

CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay found its power groove just in time to earn a key CCAA split at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon on Toro Diamond. CSUMB dropped a tough 1–0 decision in the opener before rallying from two runs down to earn a 3–2 win in the nightcap.

With the split, the Otters (25–19, 16–12 CCAA) remain in front of Dominguez Hills (23–15, 12–11) in the CCAA Tournament race with 12 games remaining.

Game 1 was a heart-breaker for Otter fans as ace Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) was punished for her lone mistake in an otherwise brilliant 4–hit performance. She yielded a fourth–inning home run that proved to be the game's only score.

The Toro pitching duo of Alyssa Olague and Sara Bhatt managed to strand all four CSUMB baserunners. The best Otter chance to break through came in the fifth when Oli Perez (Ceres HS) hit a 1-out double but was left at second.

Dominguez Hills appeared on its way to a sweep when a solo home run by Maiya Lopez and an RBI single from Alex Davis staked the Toros to a 2–0 lead in the third. But CSUMB answered quickly when Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) homered leading off the fourth, Perez tripled and Abby Alcayaga singled her home to knot the game.

Perez capped off her stellar afternoon by doubling home pinch runner Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) in the sixth for the winning run.

Gasper earned her revenge in the circle, tossing four innings of 3–hit, shutout relief to earn the victory.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Relief pitcher Sara Bhatt coaxed Ally Alcayaga, the potential go-ahead run, to fly to center to end the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… A brilliant defense play by Oli Perez picked Rianna De La Barcena off second base in the seventh inning. De la Barcena had just been sacrificed to second when Kianna Abellera hit a slow roller to short. Perez recognized she had no chance to get the speedy Abellera, so she faked the throw across the diamond and then turned to hang De La Barcena out to dry between second and third.

BURT'S DOUBLE VISION CONTINUES… Alyssa Burt's double in Game 2 was the 52nd of her career, moving her past Bianca Noriega (2013–16) for sole possession No. 4 on the single–season list. She needs four more to pass Cori Reinhardt (2012–15) for the No. 3 spot.

BURT'S DOUBLE VISION, PART II… Alyssa Burt collected her 13th double of the season in Game 2 Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, moving her into 17th place on the Otter single–season doubles list. She needs two more for a spot in the top 10.

TOP 10 ALLY… Ally Alcayaga's solo shot in the 3–2 Game 2 win Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills was the 13th of her career. That moves her into a tie for No. 10 on the Otter career home runs list. She needs two more to catch Jamie Moon (2009–12) for the No. 9 spot.

GASPER UP TO No. 11 ON WINS LIST… Cassie Gasper improved to 15–7 with the 3–2 win Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. That ties her with Jessica Boyle (2007) and Lindsey Clarkson (2015) for No. 11 on the CSUMB single–season wins list. She needs two more to match Diane Ortiz and Hayley Fein for a spot in the Top 10.
