Otters Do The Splits Again With Cougars

CSUMB wins a thriller in extras; falls in the nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — Doubleheader splits have become the norm for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team, which split again to open a 4–game series with Cal State San Marcos Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB took the opener, 4–3, in eight innings before San Marcos earned a 7–3 win in the nightcap.

Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) drove in the game-winner in the opener when pinch runner Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School For Girls) slid under the tag at the plate following Alcayaga's grounder to third. Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) fanned nine and allowed just three hits while earning her 16th win of the season.

It looked as if a sweep might be in the cards when Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Otters up 1–0 in the second inning of the nightcap. But, in what became a theme for the game, the Otters couldn't score another despite having the bases loaded with one out for the middle of the order.

The missed opportunity proved costly when the Cougars strung together five consecutive hits, including a pair of doubles and a home run, to put a seven spot on the board in the fourth. Sophomore Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) put out the fire, finishing the game with 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief, but the damage had been done.

The Otters had a chance to get back into the game in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out. Perez came through with a 1–out double tor drive in a pair, but the middle of the lineup couldn't cash in two more in scoring position with less than two outs in what proved to be CSUMB's final scoring opportunity.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Faith Soriano slid home just under the tag of San Marcos catcher Ryann Steiner to walk it off in the eighth.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… The Otters popped out twice with runners in scoring position to end the sixth and their final scoring chance of the game.

BICENTENNIAL BURT… Alyssa Burt collected her 200th career hit with an infield single in the eighth inning of Game 1 Friday. She is the eighth player in Otter history to collect 200 career hits and the first since Anneliese Lopez and Madi Casto did it during the 2017 season.

HONORIO, PEREZ, CLAY  KNOW IT'S BETTER TO GIVE… Ashley Honorio, Ivana Perez and Haylee Clay all moved up the CSUMB career sacrifices list in Friday's doubleheader. Honorio tied Courtney Varela (2014–16) for No. 4 all–time with her 27th career sac bunt. Perez laid down a pair of sacrifices to tie a quartet of Otter alums with her 20th and 21st. Clay also laid down a pair of bunts to pass Allexis Villarin (2007–08) and Marielle Valdez (2013–16) for No. 15.

FIT TO SPLIT… With Friday's split against Cal State San Marcos, the Otters now have split 12 of their 18 doubleheaders in 2023. The Otters have swept five times and been swept just once.

FEELING STRANDED…  The Otters left 10 runners on base in the Game 2 loss Friday.

SENIOR DAY SATURDAY… The Otters will honor the five players who will be playing their final home games at the Otter Sports Complex after Saturday's doubleheader. Those five are: Alyssa Burt, Cassie Gasper, Ashley Honorio, Ivana Perez and Mackenzie Vega.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ivana Perez (9), Haylee Clay (3), Ally Alcayaga (12). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set with Cal State San Marcos with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
