Five Otters Bid Farewell On Softball Senior Day

Burt, Gasper, Honorio, Perez and Vega play final home games

SEASIDE, Calif. — The emotions were there but they key hits eluded Cal State Monterey Bay as the Otters dropped a Senior Day doubleheader to Cal State San Marcos, 5–1 and 6–1, Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters said farewell to some all–time greats in ceremonies after Saturday's twinbill. Alyssa Burt, Cassie Gasper, Ashley Honorio, Ivana Perez and Mackenzie Vega all played their final games on the Otter Sports Complex turf. Burt and Gasper are the only actual seniors and the other three all have remaining eligibility but are graduating in the spring.

The day started brightly when Honorio led off with a walk and Perez went all the way to second on a perfect bunt. But the bad luck started soon thereafter when Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) smoked a ball to left center, where San Marcos centerfield Bianca Gutierrez made a nice over the shoulder catch at the track to turn extra bases and a crooked number into a simple sac fly.

In the second, the Otters loaded the bases with nobody out but couldn't get a ball to the outfield and got nothing out of the opportunity. It wasn't the only opportunity the Otters would miss in the game as they ended up leaving 12 on base, getting the leadoff runner on in all seven innings. They left seven runners in scoring position.

The second game started when Honorio couldn't handle a 2–hopper from Gutierrez leading off the game. The error led to three unearned runs. The Otters got one back in the second before, once again, coming up empty after loading the bases with nobody out.

San Marcos added three more in the third inning. The Otters got five more base runners over the final five frames, but couldn't find a way to bring any of them home as San Marcos completed the sweep.
