Gasper’s Shutout Locks Up Postseason Bid

CSUMB will head to the CCAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed

ARCATA, Calif. — Another stellar outing from senior Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) helped Cal State Monterey Bay lock up a CCAA Tournament berth with a doubleheader split Friday afternoon at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Gasper tossed a 3–hit, 3–0 shutout in Game 2 to secure a spot in next week's CCAA Tournament. Humboldt took the opener, 3–0.

Combined with losses by San Francisco State and Chico State Friday, CSUMB (27–23, 18–16 CCAA) has locked up the No. 5 seed in the CCAA Tournament. Humboldt (25–26, 13–19) will need to sweep the Otters tomorrow and get some help if it hopes to return to the postseason for the first time since 2017.

Gasper was in complete control Friday. She allowed a leadoff single in the first and a 1–out single in the third. She did not yield another hit until a 2–out single in the seventh. She struck out eight and allowed only two runners as far as second base.

Her offense gave her the only run she would need in the fourth when Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) collected her first collegiate hit and first RBI by driving home Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) with a single to right. Oli Perez (Ceres HS) added an insurance run with a solo homer, her sixth, in the sixth inning. Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) scored on a passed ball in the seventh to close the ledger.

Sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) pitched well but took a hard-luck loss in the opener. She scattered six hits but yielded an unearned run in the first, which proved to be all the Lumberjacks would need.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Micaela Harris extended the Humboldt lead to 3–0 with a 2–run home run in the fifth.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper coaxed a game–ending ground ball from Micaela Harris, who represented the tying run.

BACK WHERE THEY BELONG… The Otters will head to the postseason for the ninth time in 14 opportunities since becoming eligible at the NCAA level in 2008.

SESQUICENTENNIAL K… Cassie Gasper extended her CSUMB single–season strikeout record with eight Ks Friday, passing the 150-strikeout mark with 157 punchouts. She leads teammate Kassidy Stetler, who is No. 2 on the CCAA strikeout list with 114, by 43 entering the final day of the regular season.

MAGIC 8 BALL… With her 17th win of 2023, Cassie Gasper moved up to No. 8 on the Otter single–season wins list. She is tied with Hayley Fein (2018 & 2019) and Diane Ortiz (2010). She needs two more victories to tie Angela Cabral (2008) for the No. 7 spot.

PEREZ POWER… Oli Perez launched her sixth homer of 2023 in Friday's 3–0 win at Cal Poly Humboldt, giving her six home runs for the second consecutive season. She becomes just the sixth player in CSUMB history to hit six or more home runs in a season twice. The last player to accomplish the feat was Madison Casto, who did it in 2015 (8) and 2017 (6)..

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (14). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (6).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their regular season with a doubleheader at Cal Poly Humboldt. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
